Dissertation Title : Thai Culture-Based Community Development : A Case Study of Ban Kamphaeng Phet Community, RattaphumDistrict, Songkhla Province

Abstract

This research aimed to study Thai cultural system pertaining to belief, livelihood and social coexistence being used as a basis for community development. The study applied the qualitative approach using in-depth interviews, participation observations and focus groups with leaders, religious leaders, senior individuals, local administrative leaders and community council groups in Kamphaeng Sub-district Municipality, a total of 18 respondents. The data was analyzed, interpreted and presented with a descriptive analysis method. The results of the study reveal the following. The belief system consists of beliefs about the nature and the supernatural phenomena which can be used as a basis for community development, development of members of the community to believe rationally, following the rituals of the community and strictly complying with the rules of the community, and preserving the traditions of the community. The livelihood system includes occupation in the community, and management of livelihood. The management of livelihood coupled with organization of cultural activities can be used as a basis for community development by developing a solid career for the people, promoting economic and social development for the people in the community to earn income, keeping traditions in producing consumer goods and providing sustainable services to the community. The system of coexistence consists of the community’s exemplary way, traditions emerging from the consciousness of the community, upholding the law as the norm in the daily life, which can be used as a basis for community development through providing members of the community to have knowledge about the basic law, observing the rules of society and maintaining traditions inherited from the ancestors.
