English Language Teaching and Sustainable Development : Paradox of Convergence
Main Article Content
Abstract
Thai students have normally been instilled by teachers since the first second they went to schools. Frequently, they believe and comply with teachers’ instructions rather than their parents’ as they spend most of their time at schools. What instructed by the teachers is usually embedded in the students’ minds as social awareness. Since teachers’ roles are significantly important for Thai students, the cultivation of awareness towards being good citizen has also been proceeded in English teaching and learning activities, especially classroom activities, in which the teachers play major roles to run the activities. This academic article aims to present the advantages of teaching English language in promoting awareness of students to be a part of national sustainable development. No one denies that strong nation is built up by good and strong citizen. Teaching English language and sustainable development are then the paradox of convergence as they have the same starting point and destination, from individuals to national development but in different ways.
