Global University Rankings and Implications for Thai Universities

Abstract

Each year, a global university ranking is published by many ranking systems. Universities in the list are regarded according to their reputation and quality. Therefore, many universities have put their efforts on strategic planning and policy formulation in order to boost their global positions. The purpose of this article is to enhance understanding of university ranking from the three most influential ranking systems in international arena: Academic Ranking of World University, Times Higher Education and Quacquarelli Symonds. Results support that those rankings tend to focus more on research area and less on teaching quality. It also analyzes the competition competency of Thai universities. Furthermore, three strategic implications, including university management, academic staff quality, and international environment and support, have been recommended to Thai Higher Education to raise its opportunities in worldwide competition with capability and feasibility in the near future. This is intended to welcome effective education quality outcomes for all stakeholders and for the sustainability of university.
