Phitsanulok in the Royal Chronicles: A Historical Study for the Promotion of Cultural Tourism

Abstract

This research aims to investigate locations in Phitsanulok mentioned in royal chronicles as information for promoting cultural tourism in the province. The study focuses on the royal chronicle  of Phanchanumat (Cherm), covering from the Ayutthaya to Thonburi periods. The findings reveal that four historical cultural sites mentioned in the chronicles still exist today and are located in Mueang Phitsanulok District. These sites can be categorized into two types: 1)  historical temples - Wat Phra Si Rattana Mahathat Woramahawihan and Wat Chulamani and 2)  geographical areas - Pak Phing and Tambon Thok. These locations, documented in the royal chronicles  and still physically present today, are accessible to tourists and evoke a sense of connection with the historical atmosphere. The historical narratives derived from the chronicles can enhance the appeal of these sites and support the development of cultural heritage tourism. Furthermore, these narratives can be used to design cultural tourism routes that highlight the historical significance of Phitsanulok.
