Types of Katakana Words in Written and Spoken Japanese

Abstract

This research aims to explore the types of katakana words found in written and spoken Japanese. Data were collected from 2 sources: 1) 25 news articles (Top 5 of the month) from the NHK NEWS WEB from March to July 2023 and 2) 25 YouTube videos, selected by purposive sampling, with 300,000 views or more. The data were analyzed by classifying types of katakana words using frequencies and percentages. The study found 835 katakana words categorized into two types: origin-based and function-based. For the origin-based words, 5 categories were found, ranging from the most to the least: 1) loanwords, 2) native Japanese words, 3)English words created by Japanese, 4)compound words, and 5) onomatopoeic words and words indicating actions or states. Also, 5 categories of function-based words were discovered, ranging from the most to the least: 1) nouns, 2) NA-adjectives and descriptive adjectives, 3) adverbs, 4) verbs, and 5) I-adjectives.
