The Analysis of Adjective Clauses from Coronavirus Disease 2019 News Release Report in Department of Disease Control Website

Abstract

The purposes of the study were to investigate the frequency of adjective clauses, and to investigate the frequency of each subtype of adjective clauses which occurred from Coronavirus Disease 2019 News Release Report in Department of Disease Control Website. The research sample consisted of 1,271 sentences, comprising a total of 4,621 sentences. The sample was selected randomly using purposing sampling. The grammatical analysis used in this study focused on the adjective clauses which was based on Oshima and Hogue’s framework. The statistical analysis that was employed to find the frequency of adjective clauses and each subtype of adjective clauses was percentage. This analysis found that adjective clauses were occurred approximately in one-third of all sentences in Coronavirus Disease 2019 News Release Report in Department of Disease Control Website, accounting for 1,271 sentences (27.50%). In the subtypes of adjective clauses, it was found that the highest frequency in all was Relative Pronouns as Subjects, with 1,190 sentences (93.63%). The second subtype of adjective clauses was Adjective Clauses of Time and Place 43 sentences (3.38%), followed by Relative Pronouns as Objects of Prepositions 16 sentences (1.26%). The fourth was Relative Pronouns as Objects 12 sentences (0.94%), followed by Possessive Adjective Clauses 6 sentences (0.47%). The least subtype of adjective clauses was Relative Pronouns in Phrases of Quantity and Quality 4 sentences (0.32%).
