Ban Phan Dung Inscription: The Perspective from Pew Transliteration and Translation
Keywords:
Ban Phan Dung Inscription, Nakhon Ratchasima province, Hinduism, BuddhismAbstract
Ban Phan Dung inscription was written in Sanskrit, inscribed with Post-Pallava script and dated Śaka 751 (829 AD). It was found in Phan Dung village, Khamtaleso district, Nakhon Ratchasima province. The purpose of this article was to study the inscription using a direct method of word transliteration; word translation into Thai and finally comparing them to the previous equivalents. The result of the research revealed that this was a very important and interesting inscription because it has shown the traces of coexistence between the two different groups of Hinduism and Buddhism. According to the new transliteration and translation, there were 4 issues different from previous ones: 1) Verse 1 was composed in Praharaṇakalikā metre, 2) The word as “ṛṣivedaturaṅgena” in verse 5 indicated an era, 3) There might not be a Brahmin named “Śrīdhīdharmmātmaka”, and 4) The day and month were mentioned in verse 9 (line 10). Besides, there were 3 issues to be observed: 1) palaeography, 2) grammar and language, and 3) social and historical aspects. According to these observations, it was assumed that there were multiple scribes and authors of this inscription, and the study also found that the inscription was related to Mueang Sema Inscription face 2 (971 AD).
