"Escaping the Miasma, Embracing the Sea Breeze": Therapeutic Landscapes of the Quest for Wellbeing among the Siamese Elite during the Reign of King Chulalongkorn
Keywords:
Siamese Elite, Miasma, Therapeutic Landscapes, King Rama VAbstract
This article aims to study the concepts of seeking wellbeing among the Siamese elite during the reign of King Chulalongkorn (King Rama V). It explores the prevailing belief in "bad air" or "miasma" (ai-phit) as a primary cause of illness. It aims to address how these ideas influenced the decision to travel to coastal towns for convalescence, amidst a transitional period where germ theory began to emerge in Siamese society. Utilizing the "Therapeutic Landscapes" framework, this study employs historical methodology, analyzing primary sources such as memoirs and royal travelogues—alongside secondary sources. Accordingly, the Siamese elite maintained a strong adherence to miasmatic theory, believing that "changing the air" was a vital tool for bodily healing. This practice reflects that air and the sea were perceived as healing spaces—sanctuaries from the overcrowding and miasma of the capital. According to the principles of therapeutic landscapes, the elements that established the sea as a preferred site for recovery can be categorized into three dimensions: natural, built, and social.
