Abstract

This research article aims to study anicca in Kap Phra Chai Suriya by Sunthorn Phu. It employs literary textual analysis based on the Fine Arts Department edition, B.E. 2508 (1965), as the primary data, along with references to Buddhist doctrines. The study finds that the concept of anicca in Kap Phra Chai Suriya is clearly manifested through events and characters’ behaviors. It can be classified into four aspects: Arising and cessation (uppada-vaya-pavattito)-this is demonstrated through the rise and fall of the prosperity of Savatthi city and the power of Phra Chai Suriya, reflecting the law of change in life and society; transformation (viparinamato)-this appears in the moral and mental decline of people, as well as changes in the environment and fate; temporariness (tavakalikato)-this shows that happiness, wealth, and worldly status exist only temporarily before eventually ending with time; negation of permanence (nicca-patikkhepato)-this conveys that nothing can remain stable or permanent, even though humans attempt to cling to or construct security through power or superstition. This literary work reflects a worldview grounded in Buddhist philosophy, aiming to encourage humans to realize the anicca nature of life and turn toward the practice of Dhamma in order to let go of attachment to conditioned phenomena, which is the path to true peace.
