Abstract

This research aims to study the traumatic experiences of women prisoners, the impact of violence on women prisoners, and the responses of prisons and the care provided for women prisoners who have experienced violence. The research employs a mixed-methods approach, combining quantitative and qualitative methods. Quantitative data was collected through surveys of 150 women prisoners, while qualitative data was obtained through in-depth interviews with 15 women prisoners and 10 prison staff members. The study found that some female prisoners who have experienced physical and psychological violence suffer from mental and physical health issues, impacting their life in prison. The qualitative findings indicate a lack of comprehensive and ongoing support for female prisoners with a history of violence. Recommendations from this research include implementing a detailed screening process for female prisoners, providing ongoing psychological counseling, training prison staff, and establishing specific policies for the treatment of female prisoners with a history of violence.
