The Suffering Experiences of Migrant Workers and the Health Inequity
Abstract
This study aims to explores the suffering of illness experiences and access to health care of migrant workers in Samut Sakhon Province. The analysis was based on the concept of social determinants of health linked to the concept of health equity. The study was applied a qualitative methodology through in-depth interviews and observations, the informants were multinational migrant workers with different illness. The data was analyzed by content analysis and formulated as findings.
The study found several dimensions of health distress: suffering from occupational health risks; suffering from being expected to prevent transmission in a confined living environment; suffering for fear of being disgusted being stigmatized by society when sick; suffering with lost income or fear of being fired upon illness, suffering from lacking of accessing to health care services and health-related information and the suffering associated with healing in long-term illness and rehabilitation.
The results of the study portrayed the causes of social determinants of health, that is, unfair social structures or conditions that divide, prevent a group of people from being protected and not accessing the necessary resources in life.
