Learner Autonomy of English as a Foreign Language: A Case Study of Chinese Students in a Thai Private University

The purposes of the research were to study learner autonomy of English as a foreign language with a case study of Chinese students in a Thai private university. The sample of 169 Chinese students in a private university was asked to answer the questionnaire and semi – structured interview. The collected data were analyzed by using percentage, mean, standard and content analysis. The results were as follows: English learning and English awareness were at moderate level ( = 3.29, S.D. = 0.78). The mean was ranked from high to low were Learner autonomy in motivation, Learner autonomy in ability, Learner autonomy in confident, Learner autonomy in learning strategy, Learner autonomy in socio-cultural. The results of 17 Chinese students interview found the students' learner autonomy of English were various and consistent. Furthermore, this study benefits of English teachers and educators who teach Chinese students.
