Abstract

Abstract

         The objective of this research was to study the opinions of students about the actual and expected roles of advisors as perceived by Mahidol University International College undergraduate students in the academic year 2019. The advisors’s role consisted of 5 aspects namely; academic, consulting method, personality, providing assistance to the students, and student development. Sample group of this study was the undergraduate students of Mahidol University International College who were studying in every year and enrolling in the academic year 2019, totally 427 students. The tool used in the study were a 3-part questionnaire consisting of part 1- general information of students, part 2- questionnaires about the actual and expected roles of the advisor as perceived by the students and part 3 – Questionnaires of students' opinions about advisors and expectations about the role of advisors expected by students in the future. Frequency, Percentage, Mean and Standard Deviation were used for data analysis.

            Result of the study showed that, in terms of the actual role of the advisor as perceived by the students, the results in overall 5 aspects were at a moderate level. When considering in each aspect, it was found that, the role that the advisors had actually performed in all aspects was at a moderate level, sorted by average from descending order are personality, student development, academic, providing assistance to students, and consulting method respectively.

         Concerning the expected role of students towards the advisors as perceived by the students, the results of 5 aspects were at a moderate level. When considering in each aspect, it was found that the expected role of students towards the advisors was at a moderate level, sorted by average from descending order were personality, providing assistance to students, academic, student development, and consulting method aspect.

         When comparing the roles that are actually performed and the expected roles of the advisors who have actually performed as perceived by the students, in overall, it was found that the actual and expected roles of the advisors from 5 aspects were at a moderate level except for the personality aspect, the students have high expectations from the advisors about it.

            About students' opinions and suggestions, the results showed that an advisor should be a faculty who taught only in the subjects that students were studying. One advisor should be responsible for students up to 20 per group and responsible throughout the study until graduation. Advisor should meet the whole group of students at least once a month. Additionally, when students need consultation, an appointment should be made prior to the meeting with the advisor at the time of appointment.
