A Comparative Study of Sentence Translation Strategy: A Case Study of George Orwell’s 1984 Translation

Abstract

This article is a comparative study of sentence translation strategy in 2 Thai versions of George Orwell’s 1984. The result is: 5 sentence translation strategies; which are keeping the word order of the original sentence, changing the word order, reforming sentence structure from passive to active, combination sentences from the original version, and separating sentence from the original version, could be found in both Thai versions of George Orwell’s 1984. Omission, however, is the only translation strategy found in the first version. Due to the differences of sentence translation strategies in 2 Thai versions, it is significantly affected to those translation versions: a free translation, which mainly appeared in the first version, make the translation version a channel for sending equivalently message from the original version to Thai readers, and it correspond with culture of Thai language uses. On the contrary, a literal translation, which mainly appeared in the second version, has an intention of keeping the form of the original version more than the meaning.
