Buddha Thamma Integration for Development of the Behavior of Inmates who commit Crimes involving Drug Cases in Nan Province Prison

Abstract

This research paper has 3 objectives: 1. To study the level of behavioral development of prisoners who committed drug-related offenses in Nan Provincial Prison 2. To study the relationship between Buddha Dhamma Principles and behavioral development of prisoners who committed drug-related offenses in Nan Provincial Prison 3. To present the integration of Buddha Dhamma Principles to develop the behavioral development of prisoners who committed drug-related offenses in Nan Provincial Prison. This research is a mixed-methods research, i.e., using quantitative research and qualitative research. The sample size of 278 people. The tool used is a questionnaire. The data were analyzed by finding frequency, percentage, mean, standard deviation. Pearson’s product-moment correlation coefficient method. Furthermore, in-depth interviews with 9 key informants, using content analysis techniques with context. 
The research findings were as follow
1. The level of behavioral development of prisoners who committed drug-related offenses in Nan Provincial Prison is at a moderate level overall  (  = 3.46, S.D. = 0.78)
2. The relationship between Buddha Dhamma principles and behavioral development of drug-related offenders in Nan Provincial Prison, overall, has a very high positive relationship (R = 0.800**) with statistical significance at 0.01. 
3. Integrating Buddha Dhamma Principles to develop the behavior of prisoners who committed drug-related offenses in Nan Provincial Prison should integrate the concept of the four main principles of bhavana (development) as follows: Kaya bhavana, Physical development: The prison should promote and support all prisoners to have the four factors for living according to human rights principles to be happy according to their abilities, have equal access to medical care like outsiders, provide discipline training, recreational activities.Sila bhavana, Behavioral development: The prison should allow all prisoners to complete a training course in a correction program that is appropriate for the nature of the case and behavior, and train skills and vocational skills. Citta bhavana, Mental development: The prison should emphasize the mental aspect, by using religious principles as a guideline for behavioral development of prisoners. Pañña bhavana, Intellectual development: The prison promote and support all prisoners to receive 
education at various levels, by organizing basic education, vocational education, higher education, and informal education.
