Factors Related to Stress in Dental Students of Khon Kaen University

Abstract

This study aimed to study stress status among dental students in the 1st - 3rd years
of the academic year 2016. The study objectives were to determine the relationship
between stress and personal factors, educational factors and opinions on psychological
counselling. The study population were students of the Faculty of Dentistry Khon Kaen
University. Data collection used a questionnaire, and the relationship of variables was
analyzed using chi-square statistics and Fischer's test. There were 345 respondents out
of total dental students of 410 people, representing 84.15%. The results showed that
factors associated with stress were following: family support factors in morale and
problem-solving, educational factors include excessive workloads of assignments, fatigue
from studying, time management, Lectures of the Department of Prosthodontics during
the 1st - 3rd year, laboratory study of restorative dentistry, subject of functional
occlusal practice, subject of partially removable dentures and fixed prosthodontics, Pros
thodontics dental clinic, restorative dental clinic, preparation before clinical practice, lack
of experience and training, being reprimanded by a teacher while treating patients and
the patient management system is not conducive in the clinic, etc. As for the opinions
on counselling in psychology, the result revealed that most students wanted a
psychologist to provide counselling in the faculty.
