Synthesis of Ethical Theory as a Basis of the Hotel Business

Abstract

              The aims of this qualitative research were: 1) to study the concepts and theories of ethics; 2) to study the conditions of the hotel business; 3) to synthesize the ethical theory as a basis of the hotel business. The research tools included group discussion and in-depth interview used with 25 key informants and the gathered data were presented by the descriptive analysis based on the analytic induction. 


               The research results were as follows:


1) The ethical concepts used in hotel business operations are the principles and policies that are fundamental to the hotel business making the three parties: entrepreneurs, employees and service users satisfied. Ethics used in synthesis and application are: will theory of Immanuel Kant, utilitarianism of John Stuart Mill, virtues that protect the world (deva-dhamma or lokapāla-dhamma), four bases of social solidarity (saṅgahavatthu-dhamma), path of accomplishment (iddhipāda) in Buddhism. 


2) The hotel business which is highly competitive because in the present day, there are many hotel businesses. If any hotel has adopted a modern system for management, such as using communication technology, public relations, service, facilitation, work orders, product orders, delivery of goods and accommodation reservations, it will take advantage; the hotel management is divided into 3 areas: selfmanagement, human management and administration.


3) Based on the synthesis of the ethical theory as a basis of the hotel business, this can be carried out by 1) applying the virtues that protect the world in self-management, 2) will theory of Immanuel Kant and the four bases of social solidarity in human management and 3) path of accomplishment and theories of will in administration to satisfy the three parties: entrepreneurs, employees and service users.
