Abstract

The objectives of this research were to develop and validate the behavioral
indicators for the self–directed learning of community college students and to develop
and investigate the effectiveness of the learning model using for enhancing Selfdirected Learning of the community college students by research and development.
The research procedure consisted of 3 phases as follows : Phase 1 Develop and
validate the behavioral indicators for the self – directed learning of community
college students. The samples were 550 diploma students of 10 community colleges
during 2011 academic year. The instrument used in this phase was self-directed
learning test with five–rating scale. The questionnaire was analyzed using exploratory
factor analysis. Phase 2 Creating the learning model and instruments, the suitability of
which was under close scrutiny of specialists and Doing a pilot study of the learning
model and instruments with one class of Narathiwat Community College, during the
first semester of 2011 academic year. Phase 3 Assessing the effectiveness of the
learning model by employing an experimental design, Before and After Control Group
(Pretest-Posttest). The samples were 58 diploma students of Narathiwat Community
College, during the second semester of 2011 academic year. The period of study lasted
15 weeks of 45 hours with 3 hours per week schedule. Data analysis was done by
Dependent Samples t-test and Independent Samples t-test.
The results of this research revealed that:
1. The self-directed learning characteristics inventory for community college
students consisted of the self-directed learning characteristics, in three aspects as
follows: 1) Self-managing 2) Self-monitoring and 3) Self-modifying.
2. The learning model for enhancing Self-directed Learning of the
community college students contained 7 sequential steps; 1) Analyzing Learner by
Themselves: A 2) Designing a Learning Plan: D 3) Acting Learning Activities: A 4)
Presenting Learning Outcome: P 5) Synthesizing Knowledge: S 6) Evaluating Learning
Outcome: E and 7) Reflecting Learning Outcome: R .The specialists have the opinion
that suitable for Self-directed Learning of the community college students and there
was significantly statistical difference at .01 level in mean scores for the pilot study
group between before and after the experiment.
3. The effectiveness of the learning model for enhancing Self-directed
Learning of the community college students found that : 3.1) The learning model was
highly suitable for Self-directed Learning of the community college students. 3.2) The
mean scores of the experimental group was found that the posttest was higher than
pretest statistically significant at .01 level 3.3) The mean scores was found that the
experimental group was higher than control group statistically significant at .01 level
3.4) The students of the experimental group were evaluated by authentic assessment
and their Self-directed Learning were at good level. 3.5) The students in the
experiment group participating in this learning model were highly satisfied with the
model.
All in all, the developed learning model was considered effective and could
be used to enhance Self-directed Learning of the community college students.
