CONCEPTS FOR PREVENTING ONLINE SCAMS AMONG THE ELDERLY BASED ON BUDDHIST PRINCIPLES

Abstract

Currently, the elderly are increasingly using technology and online media for communication and information access. However, their lack of technological skills and ability to verify information makes them prime targets for online scams, such as financial fraud, which significantly impact their economic well-being, mental health, and family relationships. The key factors contributing to their vulnerability include (1) a lack of technological knowledge, (2) excessive trust in others due to cultural values, (3) insufficient support mechanisms from family and community, and (4) a lack of understanding of cyber threats.

To prevent online scams among the elderly based on Buddhist principles, the application of Buddhist teachings such as Yoniso Manasikara (systematic thinking) and the Threefold Training (morality, concentration, and wisdom) is essential. Integrating Buddhist principles with technological preventive measures can effectively reduce the risk of online scams among the elderly
