บทบาทของญี่ปุ่นในอาณาบริเวณมหาสมุทรอินเดีย

ก่อนทศวรรษ 1960 บทบาทของญี่ปุ่นในอาณาบริเวณมหาสมุทรอินเดียมีค่อนข้างน้อย ตั้งแต่ทศวรรษ 1960 เป็นต้นมา การขยายบทบาทของญี่ปุ่นทางด้านการค้าและการลงทุนระหว่างประเทศ การแข่งขันกันขยายบทบาทของอภิมหาอำนาจ และวิกฤตการณ์ต่าง ๆ ในหลายประเทศในอาณาบริเวณมหาสมุทรอินเดียส่งผลต่อการปรับนโยบายของญี่ปุ่นต่ออาณาบริเวณดังกล่าว ในการนี้ เพื่อรักษาความมั่นคงของเส้นทางเดินเรือแหล่งทรัพยากรและตลาดของสินค้าญี่ปุ่น ญี่ปุ่นได้พยายามขยายบทบาทในอาณาบริเวณมหาสมุทรอินเดียทั้งในกรอบความร่วมมือทวิภาคีและพหุภาคี นอกจากบทบาททางเศรษฐกิจซึ่งญี่ปุ่นมีความแข็งแกร่งแล้ว ญี่ปุ่นก็ได้เพิ่มบทบาททางด้านความมั่นคงมากขึ้นด้วยโดยเฉพาะอย่างยิ่งในช่วงหลังสงครามเย็น
