Apart from the traditional actors in the South Pacific region such as the United States, Australia, New Zealand, Pacific Island countries, the increasing roles of China have influenced the change of Japan’s role in order to cope with this new context. With this regard, both bilateral and multilateral diplomatic activities have been utilized by the Japanese government. For the bilateral channels, visiting the South Pacific region by the Japanese policy makers and establishing the new diplomatic missions in Pacific Island countries were noticeably increased. In the case of the multilateral relations, most activities pertaining non-traditional security issues have been done through the Pacific Islands Leaders Meeting.
