Japan Socialist Party During 1945 – 1996 : The 51 Years of Continuity and Change

During 1945 – 1996, Japan Socialist Party / Social Democratic Party of Japan had been a major political party in Japan. These socialist politicians and supporters had emphasized neutrality in the context of the Cold War, along with socialist economic policies. During 1955 – 1993, the party had become a main opposition party in the Japan’s bicameral legislature. During 1993 – 1996, the party had joined several unstable coalition governments. Several events in the 1990s, namely unimpressive performances as a party in the coalition governments coupled with the inability to cope with the Japanese economic crisis, the creation of new centrist political party and new agendas of the Post-Cold War negatively affected the popularity of the party.
