Cross-Cultural Adjustment of Retired Japanese in Chiang Mai: A Qualitative Study of Influencing factors

This qualitative study was to explore the factors influencing the adjustment process of retired Japanese in Chiang Mai. The key informants were 15 retired Japanese who have a long-term living in Chiang Mai for at least 10 months the purposive sampling method had been used to select a sample. Empirical data was collected through in-depth interviews, which was analyzed by using the content analysis method. The derived analysis reflected many factors influencing the cross-cultural adjustment. There were divided into three factor groups: 1) Travel Motivation, consisting of push factors, pull factors and individual factors 2) Anticipatory Adjustment, consisting of training and previous experience of staying in Thailand and other countries. 3) In-Country Adjustment, consisting of personality, attitude, perception, cross-cultural communication and social support.
