Japan’s Assertive Foreign Policy and the Dynamics of Relationship Between Brunei Darussalam and the East Asian Countries

After the end of the occupation of Brunei by the Japanese forces during the Pacific War, Japan’s economic roles in Brunei have been established again since 1970s through trade in Brunei’s petroleum products and Japanese industrial goods. Therefore, as a major Brunei’s trade partner, Japan’s roles in Brunei’s economy have been significantly noticeable. The increasing roles of China and South Korea in their relations with Brunei in various dimensions have challenged the Japan interests in the Japan-Brunei relations. Consequently, the Japan has to adopt policies toward Brunei by focusing cooperation in several bilateral and multilateral economic frameworks. In addition, the security cooperation in non-traditional threats between Japan and Brunei have also been focused.
