Labor Standards and Labor Protection in the Platform Economy in Thailand: A Literature Survey Published Between 2019 - 2022

Abstract
This research aims to synthesize academic and research articles on labor standards and labor protection in the platform economy published in the database of the Thai-Journal Citation Index (TCI) Center between 2019 - 2022. The keywords used in searching the articles included labor standards, platform economy labor protection, and platform labor. This research utilized a content analysis to categorize the data in terms of topics, objectives, theoretical concepts, research methods, and methods used in document analysis, as well as examine the consistency of the data. The results of this research were as follows. 1) Between 2019 – 2022, there were 45 academic and research articles on topics of labor standards and labor protection published in the TCI database. Only 8 of them were articles related to labor standards and labor protection in the platform economy. 2) In terms of labor standards and labor protection in the platform economy, this research found that Thai workers in the platform economy were not employed by the platform, instead they were self-employed workers or unofficial legal and platform partners. Furthermore, there were no specific legal measures protecting the platform economy workers and their working standards. Therefore, the platform economy workers had to rely solely on their companies’ labor standards. This resulted in employer-employee conflicts such as working regulations and conditions, occupational safety and health, employment status, wages and benefits, etc. In other words, the platform economy workers in Thailand have not been covered by the Labor Protection Act B.E. 2541.
