Corpus Stylistic Analysis of Sue Grafton’s Alphabet Novels

For several decades, the alphabet mystery series by Sue Grafton has been renowned in the United States in terms of cultural values but not for its language and linguistics. This research aimed to study the literary style through the corpus linguistics methodology by using WordSmith and Wmatrix to represent the series’ plot and the posture of gender in language. Key semantic fields and collocations played a major role in the thorough analysis. The results suggested that literary plots of the series included communication and transportation as both subsequently contributed to the series’ suspense and plot development. Collocations were found to be different among genders. Through the narrator’s point of view, the males were represented as aggressive and obstinate characters, whereas the females were based on attractiveness and talkativeness.
