Meanings of English to Thai Transliterated Words Broadcast on the Television Program “Sam Sap” from January to July 2018

Abstract

The purpose of this research article is to present the results of an analysis of English to Thai transliterated words used by the hosts and guests on the Sam Sap television program broadcast on Thai Television Channel 3 from January to July 2018, during which 70 transliterated words were found. It was found that the meanings of 68 words or 97.14 percent remain the same as those in English while one word or 1.43 percent was found to have a broader meaning and one word or 1.43 percent was found to have a narrower meaning. The reasons why the hosts and guests of the program use the transliterated words are that using such words is easy and convenient. That is to say transliteration shortens the words, makes it concise and easy to pronounce, covers adequate meaning, serves the purpose, and expresses emotions and feeling of the message sender. Moreover, the hosts and guests of the program usually have ability to use English. When transliterated words are broadcast via a mass media as television with a great number of Thai watchers, they become familiar with the words and feel the use of Thai equivalents of the words strange in everyday conversations.
