Thai Literature Instruction Based on Literature Circles to Enhance Empathy of Secondary Students: Evaluation of Instructional Process

Abstract

This research aims to develop and evaluate the suitability of a Thai literature instruction based on literature circles to enhance empathy of secondary students. The research is conducted in two phases. Phase 1 involves the study of basic information and drafting the instructional procedures including a review of relevant documents and research studies, and phase 2 includes the evaluate the suitability of instructional procedures by experts in related fields. The target group consists of three Thai language teachers and experts. The research instrument was the consistency index evaluation form. Data were analyzed using descriptive statistics, including arithmetic mean and standard deviation. .. The results revealed that:

            1) the developed instructional procedures comprise 1.1) objectives 1.2) a four-steps as step 1 selecting reading passages to group students by their interests. Step 2 assigning reading roles to analyze literature based on its elements. Step 3 empathizing with characters by understanding their lives, lessons, and themes.Step 4 discussing the thoughts and feelings of characters in connection with real-life experiences and events. 1.3) Assessment and evaluation. The process evaluation by the experts indicates a high level of suitability (Mean = 2.44, SD = 0.33). The components, ranked from most to least appropriate, are as follows the steps of the learning management process (Mean = 2.67, SD = 0.58). The objectives of the learning management process and the assessment and evaluation of the learning management process (Mean = 2.34, SD = 1.16). The developed instructional process may be able to use for enhancing empathy of secondary students.
