UNDERGRADUATE STUDENTS’ ALIENATION: A DESCRIPTIVE PHENOMENOLOGICAL STUDY

This research aimed to investigate undergraduate students’ alienation and its effects, using Giorgi’s descriptive phenomenological method. Data were gathered through semi-structured interviews with 3 alienated undergraduate students, and analyzed according to the descriptive phenomenological method. Five invariant constituents of the experiences were identified: 1) being different from others, 2) dissatisfaction of others, 3) distrust of others, 4) feeling socially isolated at university and 5) lack of support. These constituents showed alienated undergraduate students’ psychological effects and helped the researcher as a counselor gain a better understanding, as well as identify potential ways to psychologically support this group of people.
