Developing Reading Comprehension Abilities in the Malay Language Subject through Learning Management Using the KWL Plus Technique among Grade 5 Early Islamic Education Students

Abstract

The purpose of this research are 1) to compare the reading comprehension abilities in the Malay language course before and after learning by using the KWL Plus learning technique, and 2) to compare the attitudes towards the Malay language course before and after learning by using the KWL Plus learning technique. The sample group used in this research consists of 35 students from class 5/8 at Attarkiah Islamic School, Semester 1, Academic year 2024, chosen by simple random sampling. This research is a pre-experimental study design with a one-group pretest-posttest design. The research instruments include: 1) a lesson plan using the KWL Plus technique, 2) a test measuring reading comprehension abilities, and 3) an attitude scale towards the Malay language course. Data analysis will be conducted using mean, standard deviation, and using dependent t-test statistics.


The research findings were:


            1) Students who received instruction through the KWL Plus technique showed a statistically significant higher reading comprehension ability in the Malay language subject after learning, compared to before learning, at the .01 level. And


 2) Students who received instruction through the KWL Plus technique showed a statistically significant more positive attitude towards the Malay language subject after learning, compared to before learning, at the .01 level
