Abstract

With the advancement in technology, tools, and communications in the new century, the focus of learning and teaching has moved from a teacher-centered to a student-centered approach. It is important to seek a teaching approach that is suitable for these rapid changes in the world. Cooperative learning is a famous teaching method in learning and teaching foreign languages. It promotes collaborative work among students and encourages them to become active participants in group work. This applied classroom research aims to 1) find out how to process cooperative learning in a Chinese grammar course; 2) explore students’ attitudes towards cooperative learning; and 3) to study the effectiveness of the approach as an indicator of student achievement in learning in the Chinese grammar course. Data collection was done through questionnaires, group interviews, and classroom observations. Mean and standard deviation of the quantitative data was analyzed, as well as the content of the qualitative data collected. The findings revealed that Chinese grammar courses applied collaborative learning activities by dividing students into groups of four to six individuals, where they could study content, discuss and exchange ideas, arrange games, and find video clips related to Chinese grammar for their presentation. Groups did this while practicing exercises with their peers and writing a comparative report of  Thai-Chinese grammar. In addition, the results showed that a cooperative learning model can stimulate students’ interest and enthusiasm. It enhances students’ satisfy action with their learning experience, develops skills needed for effective social interactions and significantly improves student achievement.
