Kae Bon Mae Yai: Cultural Value and Creative Expression in Thai Folk Song by Por Pak Khwai

Abstract

This article explores three key aspects of the folk song Kaebon Mae Yai: (1) the role of Por Pak Khwai (Mr. Monthon Ahosi) as its creator; (2) the depiction of the son-in-law and mother-in-law relationship within the song; and (3) the song’s function as a cultural medium for expressing underlying sexual tension and subtly challenging established social norms. The study argues that Kaebon Mae Yai, adapted from the original song Jam Jai Jak, serves not only as a humorous and artistic performance but also as a reflection of the improvisational skill and cultural commentary of its composer. Through lyrical analysis and contextual interpretation, the song is shown to contribute to the evolving discourse on family roles and personal expression in Thai folk music.
