Naming and Meanings of Building and Place Names at Pibulsongkram Rajabhat University

Abstract

This research aimed to analyze the naming and meanings of 103 buildings and places at Pibulsongkram Rajabhat University. The results of the research revealed that the naming of buildings and places at Pibulsongkram Rajabhat University can be classified into 6 characteristics: 1) the use of Pali and Sanskrit compound words (samasa), including compounds with sandhi (phonological blending) and compounds without sandhi; 2) the use of compound words, including combinations of Thai with Thai, Thai with Pali, Thai with Sanskrit, Thai with Pali-Sanskrit, Thai with English, and Thai with other foreign languages; 3) the use of transliterated words, including English transliterated words and English transliterated words combined with numbers; 4) the use of cardinal numbers, including standalone numbers and numbers combined with building and place names; 5) the use of abbreviations, including abbreviations used as building and place names, abbreviations with numbers, and abbreviations combined with building and place names and numbers; and 6) the use of syllables, with six-syllable names being the most common among building and place names. Regarding the meanings of building and place names at Pibulsongkram Rajabhat University, 6 categories were found: 1) meanings related to the names of kings and individuals; 2) meanings related to significant events; 3) meanings related to plants; 4) meanings related to the functions or uses of the buildings or places; 5) meanings related to wisdom or knowledge;   and 6) other miscellaneous meanings.
