An Analysis of Love in the Folklore Titled Phaya Kong-Phaya Phan

Abstract

This article aims to study and analyze the characteristics of different forms of love occurring in the folklore ‘Phaya Kong-Phaya Phan’ as well as the role of love effecting the storyline. The study found 5 forms of love which were (1) the love of a wife for her husband, (2) the love between a father and his son, (3) the love between a mother and her son, (4) the love between Grandma Hom and Phaya Phan, and (5) the love of a king for his kingdom. Each form of love in the folklore ‘Phaya Kong-Phaya Phan’ was considered important as it helped to demonstrate the distinct behaviors and personality traits of the characters. It was aslo the main factor that drove the development of the plot.  Moreover, the love in this story was not limited only in emotion but was also relevant to responsibility, role, and moral which people needed to comply, including the explanation of the history of important places.
