Abstract

This study aimed to analyze the types of meanings and the beliefs of Thai elephant names in the National Elephant Institute in patronage (Thai Elephant Conservation Center), Wiang Tan, Hang Chat District, Lampang; in Ayutthaya Elephant Palace and Royal Kraal, Pratu Chai, Phra Nakhon Si Ayutthaya District, Phra Nakhon Si Ayutthaya; and in online sources such as Facebook pages. The data analysis was based on the conceptual framework of Suchada Jiaphong, who studied textile motifs in Phitsanulok: an analysis of meaning and beliefs. This study found a total of 136 Thai elephant names, which could be categorized into 9 types of meanings, ranked from most to least, as follows: meanings related to characteristics (49 names, 36.03%); meanings related to plants (18 names, 13.24%); meanings related to places and buildings (16 names, 11.76%); meanings related to religion (15 names, 11.03%); meanings related to nature and environment (13 names, 9.56%); meanings related to objects and utensils (10 names, 7.35%); meanings related to humans (7 names, 5.15%); meanings related to animals (6 names, 4.41%); and meanings related to food (2 names, 1.4%). For the beliefs in Thai elephant names, the study revealed 5 types of beliefs: (1) elephants are charming, graceful, and beloved animals; (2) elephants are the national animal of Thailand; (3) elephants are a symbol of auspiciousness; (4) elephants are animals with good fortune; and (5) elephants enhance the prestige and power of the king. This study contributes to a deeper understanding of the meanings and beliefs, as well as gaining knowledge and understanding of the characteristics of naming Thai elephants.
