English Collocations with Delexical Verbs in Beautiful Creatures

The study aimed to investigate the frequency and the forms of English collocations with delexical verbs in the novel Beautiful Creatures. It only focused on the usage of “have, take, make, give, go and do” with the collocation type of verb + noun. The instruments used were Oxford Collocation Dictionary for Students of English (2009), and the collocational framework of Benson et al. (1997) with AntConc 4.1.1 program. To analyze data, the percentage was applied. The main findings showed that the novel contained 548 collocations (0.10%) of “have, take, make, give, go, and do” from 523,956 words. However, there were only 165 delexical verbs found with the highest frequency of “have” for 56 words (33.93%), followed by “make” for 55 words (33.33%), “take” for 52 words (31.51%), and “do” for 2 words (1.21%). Nevertheless, “give” and “go” were not found.
