Abstract

The purpose of this research was to analyze patterns of synonyms in English that appeared in the Covid-19-related news published in two online newspapers: the Bangkok Post and The Nation, and explore the frequency of synonyms in English that appeared in the Covid-19-related news published in the two online newspapers: the Bangkok Post and The Nation. The sample group used in this research was headlining and leading news in English from the news of the COVID -19 situation of the Bangkok Post Online newspaper, totaling 321 headlines and leading news and of The Nation Online newspaper, totaling 272 headlines and leading news. The sample group was randomly selected by using a purposive sampling technique. The conceptual framework used in this research is that synonyms are words that mean the same in specific contexts by applying the synonym analysis from research by Nita Prateepchaikon (2010), which is divided into two types: 1. synonyms in word form (word) and 2. synonyms in phrase form (phrase). The statistics used for data analysis were frequency percentages. The results showed that the pattern of using synonyms in the headlines and leading news of the Bangkok Post Online newspaper contained 508 words, from which 404 or 79.52% were found in a word form, and 104 or 20.48% were found in a phrase form. The Nation Online newspaper's headlines and leads comprised 558 words, from which 525 or 94.09% were found in a word form and 33 or 5.91% were found in a phrase form. The results concluded that the most common type of synonyms that appeared in headlines and leads of Covid-19-related news in the two online newspapers was in a word form.
