A Comparative Study of the Idioms Relating to the rain in Indonesian, Thai and Vietnamese Languages

Abstract

The objectives of this research are to study and compare the idioms containing the word “Rain” in Three Languages: Indonesian, Thai and Vietnamese and to study the reflecting natural image and lifestyles by analyzing meanings and presenting them into descriptive analysis and collecting idiomatic data from those three language dictionaries. The results in the three languages have the same meanings about “rain”; however in Thai, rain has more meanings when using in different grammar rules. Regarding “Rain” in idioms, it has a similar reflection in three languages related with geography, human being and lifestyles. In Thai language, it remarkably reflects family, religion and beliefs, whereas in Vietnamese, it reflects animals and behavioral values and in Indonesian, it reflects sports.
