บทคัดย่อ
The study examined labour shortage and demand of ASEAN migrant workers employment of hotel business in Phuket. The research instrument was the questionnaire developed by the researcher. Open- and closed-ended items were used to collect data. The target of the study is 146 hotels of Type 3 and 4 in Phuket. Statistical analysis of the data was conducted and the findings of the study are shown as follows.
- It has been found that most of hospitality businesses are experiencing labour shortage. The problem is prevailing among various hotel departments. The highest level of the shortage was found in the front office as well as food and beverage department, respectively. The leading cause of labour shortage is that applicants were under qualified to fill available positions.
- The current employment of foreign workers within the hotel industry in Phuket was found in 110 hotels, which accounted for 75.34 percent. The average number of foreign workers was 3.26 per establishment. Additionally, 29 establishments still have the need to hire foreign workers in the future, representing 19.86 percent. In regard to demand for foreign workers from ASEAN countries, the results show that the highest demand was 45.61
percent of workers from the Philippines, followed by 25 percent of the Burmese workers. However, 58.63 percent of China workers was the highest demand for foreign workers among ASEAN plus 4 countries. Basic level of communicational English was shown primarily as the required qualification and followed by the problem-solving skill.
3. The alternative most frequently used to cope with labour shortage was recruitment of more workers with proximate qualification or an increase of overtime allocation.
