“Saipan - Sai Sampan”: Multiculturalism through the creation of a short film

Abstract

The academic article titled “Saipan - Sai Sampan”: Multiculturalism through the creation of a short film aimed to communicate the understanding of the process of creating short films through visual and auditory storytelling. The focus was on presenting the story with clarity, without complex plot twists. The creators drew inspiration from fostering knowledge and understanding of coexistence in a multicultural society, with the family serving as a medium for building relationships with children. The study was conducted in four stages, namely: 1) Relevant concepts and theories, 2) Field data analysis, 3) Film production process, and 4) Evaluation phase. The study results revealed that the short film "Saipan – Sai sampan" had a duration of 8 minutes. The creators aimed to create awareness about the way of life of people in the Yala province through the friendship of three culturally diverse children. The film conveyed the importance of cultivate friendship among children, with the most crucial aspect being the cultivation of knowledge and understanding within families. The evaluation of satisfaction and perception among the target audience indicated a high level of overall satisfaction ( x̅ = 4.41, S.D.=0.73). This demonstrates that the sample group had an improved understanding of the developed media, as the short film was an engaging medium with easily comprehensible content. It captured the viewers' interest and allowed them to understand and remember the content and characters more easily, enabling them to apply it in their daily lives. Furthermore, incorporating cultural symbols from the local area into the storytelling enhanced the viewers' perception and understanding, as it reflected their memories and sense of belonging to the local context.
