An Analysis on Adverb “CHANTO”
Abstract
In general, CHANTO is classified as a type of adverbs of manner. This research analyzed CHANTO based on meaning and structure from the viewpoint of Imanishi (2004) and Nitta (2002). Imanishi defined the meaning of CHANTO as the adverb that expresses harmony between speakers’ ideal and exemplary with an outside state of matter. This research agreed with this meaning but disagreed with the adverb type. CHANTO is an adverb of manner in the subtype of subjectivity and evaluation based on Nitta (2002), but in this research, CHANTO does not modify only the manner but also the state of matter. To support this insistence, modification of noun and adjective predication and being outside of the scope of negative were explained as demonstration.
