The Effectiveness of Peer Reading in Japanese Language Reading Class

Abstract

This research uses the concept of peer learning to improve Japanese language teaching. The objective is to study the effectiveness of peer reading activities in Japanese language reading class. The target is a group of 32 Thai students who enrolled in fundamental Japanese reading class. A survey was conducted by using a questionnaire and follow-up interviews before drawing a conclusion based on the opinions of the students. It was found that peer reading can improve fundamental Japanese reading skill. The results of the activities are (1) the students' anxieties reduced and they were encouraged to prepare the lessons and to read by themselves, (2) they were able to summarize what they read and told it to others, (3) their critical thinking and autonomous learning skills were strengthened, and (4) their motivation to learn Japanese increased.
