Abstract

The research explored translation error patterns caused by English present participial phrases in English-Thai translation. The data were obtained from translation tests collected from 230 participants, English majors at Burapha University. The research used a qualitative approach. The data were analyzed to identify syntactic patterns of translation errors. The result uncovered that translation errors on present participial phrases were grouped into seven patterns, namely:
1) translation of present participial phrases into independent clauses
2) translation of present participial phrases into adverbial clauses
3) translation of present participial phrases into adjective clauses
4) translation of present participial phrases into noun phrases
5) translation of present participial phrases into adverbial phrases
6) translation of present participial phrases into verb phrases, and
7) misplacement of conjunctions. The syntax of target texts were analyzed and categorized to account primarily for the translation error patterns.
