Abstract

This article is developed from the research study “The project of art and culture promotion for the area-based development of Khemmrat district in Ubon Ratchathani province”. The Tang Wai dance had long been being performed by different groups of people along Thai-Laos border.  It is a form of a ballad delivered and performed in "Yao-Ya" medical treatment ritual (to physically and spiritually heal people or patients with unknown illnesses) among Blu-Kratak tribes in  Tang Wai Khok village, Chonnaburi district, Savannakhet province, Lao People's Democratic Republic.  Tang Wai dance performed in the Kingdom of Thailand was originated in Muang Jiad village, Jiad subdistrict, Khemmarat district, Ubon Ratchathani province.  Originally, it was performed in a celebration and an offering ritual dedicated to the shrine of the ancestors of different local villages.  Nowadays, Tang Wai dance is considered to be one of the geographical ethnicity and shared cultural heritage of Savannakhet province in Lao People's Democratic Republic and of Khemmarat district, Ubon Ratchathani province in the Kingdom of Thailand.
