บทคัดย่อ
บทความนี้นำเสนอการศึกษาอาชญนิยายชุด “วินเซนต์ คัลวีโน” ของ คริสโตเฟอร์ จี มัวร์ โดยตัวละครเอกเคยประกอบอาชีพเป็นทนายความในนครนิวยอร์กและผันตัวมาเป็นนักสืบในกรุงเทพมหานคร นวนิยายชุดนี้เป็นตัวอย่างของอาชญนิยายตามขนบ hard-boiled ซึ่งก่อเกิดขึ้นมาในสภาพเศรษฐกิจและสังคมของสหรัฐอเมริกาในช่วงระหว่างสงครามโลกครั้งที่หนึ่งและครั้งที่สองโดยบทความนี้มุ่งเน้นศึกษาตัวละครนักสืบในนวนิยายทั้ง 17 เรื่อง ในฐานะ “ชีวิตที่เปล่าเปลือย” (bare life) ตามแนวคิดของ จอร์โจ อากัมเบน ที่ติดกับดักในพื้นที่ระหว่างชีวิตในทางกายภาพ (biological life) และชีวิตในทางการเมือง (political life) อากัมเบนเรียกพื้นที่นี้ว่าเป็น “สภาวะยกเว้น” ซึ่งถือครองโดยผู้ที่ทรงอำนาจสูงสุด (sovereign power) เป็นพื้นที่ที่ประสิทธิศักย์ของกฎหมาย (efficacy of law) ได้รับการงดเว้นแต่ยังคงการบังคับใช้กฎหมายอยู่ (force of law) สุดท้ายแล้วอากัมเบนนำเสนอทางออกที่จะปลดเปลื้องพันธนาการให้แก่ชีวิตที่เปล่าเปลือยโดยการละเว้นกิจกรรมในทางโลกและมุ่งสู่การไตร่ตรองใคร่ครวญ ซึ่งเป็นการดำเนินชีวิตที่เน้นคุณค่าทางจิตวิญญาณและเหตุผล (logos)
