Abstract

The research objective was to investigate the most frequently used words in Thai recipes from French language websites on Thai recipes. The documents were processed using a computerized program from the web http://textanalyser.net and the results were compiled into a list to find the most frequently used words. It showed that 2,975 different words were found among 213,929 French words from the authentic materials. The most frequently used word was “de” appearing 18,518 times of appearances or a frequency of 8.65%. The top 2,000 most frequent words used in Thai recipes comprised 94.13% of the texts. The vocabulary used in the context of Thai cooking was limited. Therefore, learning French for this specific purpose should be done in a short time. Functional words should be focused on because of their high frequency of appearance. Some words have a specific meaning in cooking. So it is necessary to learn words in context. The knowledge of the cultural environment of native speakers is also important for learners. Furthermore there should be ongoing research to develop French lessons for Thai cooking from this word list.
