Abstract

This study aims to: 1) examine the values and conditions of vernacular architectural heritage of the Li ethnic group in Hainan Province; 2) analyze the key factors and challenges influencing its management and conservation; and 3) develop a sustainable management model for vernacular architectural heritage. A mixed-methods approach was employed, combining in-depth interviews with 10 experts and questionnaire surveys administered to 150 respondents, consisting of 75 residents and 75 tourists. Qualitative data were analyzed using content and thematic analyses, while quantitative data were examined through descriptive statistics. Quantitative findings indicate a high level of heritage value perception, with scores for cultural value (x̅=4.45) and for tourism value (x̅=4.32) Conservation awareness remains at a moderate to high level (x̅=3.85). Impacts of tourism show high economic benefits (x̅=4.40), while cultural and environmental impacts are moderate (x̅=3.60 and x̅=3.75), Qualitative findings reveal an absence of integrated management systems, surface-level conservation efforts that compromise authenticity, a lack of maintenance systems, the loss of traditional skills, and tourism pressure. The integration of the findings highlights a gap in management systems that leads to the development of a sustainable management model consisting of inputs, processes, and outputs that support long-term conservation and authenticity preservation. Therefore, recommendations include establishing integrated management systems, enhancing participation, and controlling tourism impacts.
