The Progression of Drama Puppet Performance: Krutthanuphap (The Power of Garuda)

Abstract

This qualitative research aims to study the background and the progression of drama puppet performance, as well as its patterns and components in the performance in the episode of Krutthanuphap (The Power of Garuda) by Traditional Thai Puppet Theatre (Joe Louis). Research tools were interview forms and participatory observation, conducting together with Thai Performing Arts scholars as well as the workers from Traditional Thai Puppet Theatre (Joe Louis). Data analysis was conducted by inductive conclusion. The result revealed that Traditional Thai Puppet Theatre (Joe Louis) has long been a renowned puppet theatre until the present, succeeded from Mr. Grae Suptawanich, Mr. Tongyoo Suptawanich, and Mrs. Yhib Suptawanich to Mr. Sakorn Yangkeawsod, Mr. Pisutr Yangkeawsod, and Mr. Surin Yangkeawsod (the current successors of Mr. Sakorn Yangkeawsod) under the brand of Traditional Thai Puppet Theatre (Joe Louis). The puppet performances have been contemporarily improved. Krutthanuphap (The Power of Garuda) was regarded as an example that portrayed many aspects of the performance such as concept, patterns, and performance components. These included drama lyrics, puppet features, costumes, music, scene, performance techniques, and choreography to preserve the contemporary concept of the Traditional Thai Puppet Theatre (Joe Louis).
