Socialization Local Wisdoms in self-care of Elderly in Samutprakarn Province

Abstract

The purposes of this research were to study 1) the body of knowledge of local wisdom in taking care of the elderly's self-care 2) the process of transferring local wisdom in taking care of the elderly's self-care to the recipients 3) the learning outcome on socialization local wisdoms of the elderly's self-care. The research used a qualitative research methodology. The sampling group was divided into 2 groups. The first group was 398 elderlies selected from multi-stage sampling. Data gathered for the qualitative study was from 5 Likert Scale Questionnaire. Statistical software package was used for data analysis. The other group was the quantitative survey. The pilot study in 6 communities using participative observation and the interview as well as the in-depth structured interview with 18 persons was conducted. The results of this research were as follows:  1) Knowledge of local wisdom in self-care of elderly; it was found that there was the environmental dependence in community lifestyles using flora and natural resource in their own habitat as both food and medicine for their own health care. 2) The process of transferring local wisdom in taking care of the elderly's self-care to the recipients was discovered that personal potential in knowledge, attitude, belief, and outcome affecting the suitable behavior of passing knowledge in social context through telling, real-practice, and demonstration. 3) The assessment of learning outcomes in transferring the local wisdom knowledge in self-care of elderly was showed that elderlies were able to be both transferors and recipients by telling the result of real practice of local wisdom in taking care of themselves and socializing as the learning source suitable for the environment and social management for good health.
