The Meaning of Time Expressions in Thai Country Songs

Abstract

Most of the study of the language used in Thai country songs, aimed to analyze the use of words in grammar, vowel rhyme, repeated, reduplicated, compound, slang and foreign language including the word of feeling such as sorrow, sarcasm, refreshed, amused etc. and the used of euphuism and image.

Besides analyzing Thai country songs in those aspects, the study of the significant of words in Thai country songs had also been another interesting aspect. Especially the time expression, if we study, it will help us to understand and can reach to the meaning of the lyrics, which the composers need to convey to the audience in simple, and straightforward languages, and had the meaning that reflects the social and cultural all the time interestingly. It was said that “Thai country songs were a heritage of entertainment that worth for conservation”. It is an intellectual product that composers had tried to convey the information that reflects society and culture all the time interestingly. According to the study, it was found that the meaning of time expressions had many characters. There were point of time within 1 day, point of time about days and months by calendar system, and the period of time.
